Problems with SPAM…

Well, yesterday the site was hit with so much spam (400+ spam comments) and it didn’t stop. The only solution I could think of to fix this problem quickly was to make registration mandatory. I’m sorry about the inconvenience this causes, but now of you would like to comment you have to register. If anyone has any advice on how to combat comment spam, leave a comment (after registering, LOL) or send your comment in through the Contact page.

Thanks!

I've have spam for Channel-Ai blog for quite a while now. To fight spam without setting comments to registered user only, you have several options (Google will tell you their site):

    - use CAPTCHA

    - use Bad Behavior

    - use Akismet

I'm haven't tried using Akismet myself since the spam are well controlled by using just Bad Behavior alone. Bad Behavior totally ignores spambot's http request (save bandwidth in a way) whereas Akismet analyze the comment content to verify if it's a spam. You need to get a key from WordPress.com in order to activate your Akismet. CAPTCHA requires user input confimation code to verify that it's a human commenting and not a spam bot, which might make it slightly troublesome for commenters, but definitely better than forcing commenter to register at your blog site.

Hope it helps. Good luck preventing spam! :)

There should be a setting in wordpress (or it was a plugin, not sure) that allows you to set the max. number of hyperlinks in one comment, before it's held for approval. I've set it to max. 1, since spammers mostly use at least 2 hyperlinks, usually in in various formats (using HTML, BBcode, etc.).

Oh and by the way, hi! great site you have going here ;) .
